The World Health Organization has recently named depression the world’s leading contributor to the global burden of illness, and the planet is growing awash in pills to treat it. In these times, a long tradition of understanding and treating depression more centered around unconscious conflict is often overlooked. This talk, based on a section of the author’s forthcoming book Depression: A History, will emphasize the vitality and diversity of concepts of depression in depth psychology.

About the Presenter: Jonathan Sadowsky, Ph.D., is the Theodore J. Castele Professor of Medical History at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He is the author of Imperial Bedlam: Institutions of Madness in Colonial Southwest Nigeria (1999) and Electroconvulsive Therapy in America: The Anatomy of a Medical Controversy (2016).
